This is what you see coming and going from the track.  The tops of the highest mountains were shrouded in clouds and there was snow at the higher altitudes.  This slip (landslide) had occurred in the last few weeks due to all the rain that had been received.  You need to remember that the amount of rain received recently had been considered a lot even for an area that receives 5-8 meters or rain a year. 

The hillsides in this area drop steeply into the water (which is why the slips occur in the first place) and there are steep dropoffs in the water, with the lakes sometimes hundreds of meters deep.  I have been up to a slip in a kayak and in the water is a giant tangle of trees and rocks.  A whole lot of "stuff" had to fall into the lake to create this slip.  I saw this it on the way in and did have some concerns that the track might be plagued by slips and it would be hard to negotiate the track.  Seeing this made me wonder what was ahead.  But no matter, nothing was going to stop me.
