Over
the years, I've tramped quite a bit in New Zealand. There are
some tracks that are in a class by themselves. For lack of a
better term, we'll call them the Epic Tracks. These tracks are typically longer and harder than most others. For all of these, you had better be prepared, be fit, and be ready for really deep mud and more water than you ever knew existed. But you had better be prepared to have your breath taken away too. The Dusky Track is the most amazing track I've ever seen (and I've seen quite a few), not far behind it is the George Sound Track. Both of these are in Fiordlands National Park, one of the most outstanding places in the entire world. The Northwest and Southern Circuits are in that haven of mud, Stewart Island. Compared with Fiordlands, it doesn't rain as much on Stewart Island nor is the mud quite as deep, but it goes on and on and on. It's wonderful. Well, as mentioned, be prepared to have your breath taken away. |
