Again, a very typical scene between Lake Katherine and the sound.  See the brown leaves hanging from the fern trees?  As the fern grows taller, new leaves grow from the center and spread out.  The lower branches, which don't get as much sunlight, die off and hang down the sides.  There is no way you can write about Fiordlands without at least mentioning the tree ferns.
